April Highlights

April kicks off with The Big Swim and Easter celebrations at local churches as well as ANZAC Day commemoration at George’s Heights

The Big Swim
The 32nd Balmoral Swim for Cancer, in aid of Children’s Cancer research is to be held on Sunday 2nd April with individual and team relays for young and old of various lengths.  The first race begins at 7 am with the main event at 10am  – a 1km swim.

If you are not feeling energetic enough for competitive events, the area around The Rotunda will be set with a number of stalls. Why not watch the races siting on grass with a sausage sandwich in hand listening to the Navy Band who will be playing between 10am and midday?

Easter Activities
Prior to Easter on 2nd April at 2pm, St Luke’s Music Association is presenting Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” with tickets available at the door. Not to be missed, although a little further afield, is the St Andrew’s Cathedral choir and orchestra presenting Handel’s “Messiah” on Good Friday, 7th April at night at The Cathedral. This is always a marvellous performance.

Just a short walk from The Oriana at The Rotunda on Easter Sunday, 9th April at 7am there is to be a service at the Rotunda.

Anzac Day, 25th April, is a National Day of Remembrance in Australia and New Zealand commemorating all Australians and New Zealanders “who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations” and “the contribution and suffering of all those who have served”.

There are dawn services and marches all around the nation.

In the CBD there will be a service at The Cenotaph in Martin Place between 4.20am to 5.30am with a march by veterans at 9am, watched by thousands lining the streets as well as being shown live on TV.

However, more locally, at Georges Heights, on the Old Parade Ground, Best Avenue Mosman, a traditional dawn service will be held, 5.30am to 7am. The service is to be proceeded by a short video the “Western Front 1915” produced and narrated by Mosman High School. A sausage sizzle and a coffee van will be on site.
