Whale Watching May to November

For the next 6 month Sydneysiders are treated to spectacular aerobatic displays by the world’s largest mammals.

From mid-May to the end of November, Sydney’s famed whale visitors thrill spectators during their annual migration. Humpback whales begin their 5000 kilometre swim from the Southern Ocean along the coast to their breeding and calving grounds in tropical waters in the north.

The species were protected in 1966 when it has been estimated that at least 90% of the population had been decimated by whaler hunters, leaving a tiny population around only 5000. This number has grown to 30,000 over the last 50 years!

Humpback whales are exciting to watch – the most spectacular being when they breach. The whale jumps spectacularly in the air and falls back with a huge splash. Not only do they perform aerobatic displays but if you are lucky, you may hear the males sing complex songs which last for 10-20 minutes.

Although you can see this migration from various vantage points along the coast and on occasions some have entered the harbour and swum close to the beach at Balmoral, giving special delight to guests of The Oriana, there are daily Whale Watching sightseeing cruise tours.

Please let us know if you would like The Oriana to book this tour before you arrive so you are assured of a seat on these popular cruises.

Remember when booking The Oriana to come direct to me via email or on The Oriana website to save booking fees from listing agencies.
