Australia Day Celebrations
All around Australia on 26th January people from all walks of life celebrate our national day. This day marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of eleven British ships carrying soldiers and convicts at Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour), and the raising of Britain’s flag at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip.
This is the day when our newest immigrants receive their citizenship papers and old and new Australians celebrate together what makes Australia such a wonderful place to live.
Snags (sausages) on the barbie (barbecue) on the beach or in the backyard and numerous street parties for family, friends and neighbours are the order of the day …..not forgetting in Sydney all the fun on the harbour with ferry races, a flotilla of tall ships, jet skis and other craft decorated with Australian flags add to the fun. Those lining the harbour foreshores are all treated as well to flypast displays by the RAAF.
There are numerous events throughout the CBD, suburbs and country centres and…. to cap it off – fireworks! There is no more perfect setting for the fireworks than the backdrop of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and our beautiful Sydney Harbour.
Although Australia Day comes but once a year, why not plan to stay at The Oriana – there is always some special event or activity throughout the year being held in Sydney and locally at Balmoral Beach which will delight all members of the family.
