The Lady Hopetoun visits Balmoral.

Sydney last weekend was at its best. The weather was warm and family groups at Balmoral Beach were sunbaking and frolicking in the water when a ship’s whistle could be heard, sounding like an old steam train. Around Middle Head appeared the 116 year old steam launch, the Lady Hopetoun and proceeded to circuit the beach, “tooting” as it did so, much to the delight of all on the beach.

Built in Berry’s Bay North Sydney in 1902, The Lady Hopetoun was named after the wife of Australia’s first Governor General. The launch was built for the Sydney Harbour Trust for use by the Board and to take important dignitaries around the Harbour, among them, King George VI as Duke of York, the Duke of Windsor, the Duke of Gloucester, the King and Queen of Thailand, Princess Alexandra; Governors General of Australia, Governors and Premiers of New South Wales; and many other world figures. It has also featured in films such as Gallipoli.

It was lovingly and painstakingly restored by the Sydney Heritage Fleet and recommissioned in 1970 for the Captain Cook Bi-Centennial. It still retains its triple expansion engine and the coal-fired boiler was last replaced in 1997.

Several years ago while enjoying a day out on the Lady Hopetoun, I volunteered to be a stoker, shovelling coal to heat the boilers……however only for about 5 minutes. It was hard work!

‘The Lady Hopetoun is available for charter and is suitable for corporate and private functions such as weddings, birthdays etc and conducts 5 hour cruises on special event days such as Australia Day.

Autumn at Balmoral is probably my favourite time of year. The water is still lovely and warm and the summer crowds have left the beach for locals to enjoy.

There are still dates available in April, May and June so why not take the opportunity to book The Oriana for a relaxing holiday.
