Sydney is built on sandstone which is the ideal medium for tunnelling. All over Sydney there is an extensive network of former military tunnels.
One such fortification system is on Middle Head, right on the doorstep of The Oriana and a tour of the tunnels with their amazing history is now available. The tunnels were constructed to link battery fortifications, built to defend Sydney from invasion by sea from the earliest days of the colony. There are two sets of tunnels to be explored at Georges Heights and Chowder Bay, linked by easy walking paths in this beautiful harbour foreshore reserve.
As early as 1801 – 23 years after the first settlement, Governor King established a small battery at Georges Head and later in 1870s it was extensively developed to become a key part of new fortifications designed to protect the entrance to Sydney Harbour. Remains of these fortifications, located at the highest point opposite the Harbour entrance, still exist and can be accessed walking paths from Chowder Bay.
This is a great tour for all ages. Do not panic! You will not feel claustrophobic as the tunnels are not entirely blacked out. You will not be crawling on all fours along tunnels like the “Moles” or “Clay Kickers”, as the WW1 tunnellers in France were affectionately known. The tunnels are wide and high and there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy the expansive vistas Middle Head offers as knowledgeable guides make history come alive with interesting anecdotes.
The tours are led by volunteers from the Sydney Harbour Trust, many with an ex-military background to provide the right note of authenticity. Taking groups of up to twenty, there is something of interest for everyone – from history lovers to bushwalkers and families alike. Participants are first provided with an orientation of the harbour, before embarking on an underground adventure.
The tours are conducted on the first Sunday of every month. Let us know if you would like The Oriana to reserve places on the tour.
Even if your stay does not coincide with tour dates, the military fortifications and walks are there for all to enjoy.
Please remember when booking The Oriana to come direct via email or The Oriana website to save Agency Listing Fees.
